The Electoral Commission (EC) has reiterated that there will be no extension to the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
Despite calls from various groups for an extension, the Commission is confident that it will reach its target of registering 623,000 first-time voters.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Deputy Commissioner Samuel Tetteh emphasized that the decision for an extension is “not on the table” for consideration. He pointed out that the exercise has been running smoothly, with a significant increase in the number of applicants registered.
“We have 21 days to register applicants, and in the first week, we had a high turnout. However, as the days went by, the situation normalized, and we are not seeing the same level of queues at registration centers,” Tetteh explained.
Furthermore, the Commission has denied allegations of secret registration using stolen BVRs. Election Watch Ghana, the group that made the allegations, has been challenged to provide evidence to substantiate their claims.
The Commission urged political parties to publish their daily registration figures from all gazetted centers to ensure transparency in the process. As of now, the Commission has registered 522,025 applicants after 13 days of the ongoing exercise.
The limited voter registration exercise is scheduled to end on Monday, May 27, 2024. The Commission remains committed to ensuring a fair and transparent registration process for all eligible voters.
