On May 23, 1961, Duncan Airlie James, a Scottish actor well known for his parts in ID2: Shadwell Army and Tomb Raider was born. Yoshi Takahashi’s uncle is James. While attending the tuition-paying Keil School, James excelled at rugby. He originally became interested in martial arts when he began studying Shotokan karate.

He was a drummer as well, and he was a member of several bands, including Nazareth. In order to look into new artistic prospects, he relocated to Boston, Massachusetts in the US. Ross Campbell, a Scottish composer, has him as an older sibling.

His victory over a world Muay Thai title made him the first Scottish fighter to compete in K-1. In the past, he had engaged in heavyweight kickboxing competitions. He went back to Scotland in the late 1980s and started learning Muay Thai kickboxing. His first title came from the 1993 Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Championship of the World Kickboxing Association.

After successfully defending that championship, he gave it up and moved up to the cruiserweight and then heavyweight divisions, where he won a number of further titles. In February 1999, at K-1 Rising Sun ’99, he made his K-1 debut against the legendary Musashi of Japan. He lost through technical knockout after being brought down three times in the third round.
