The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Dubik Mahama, has come under fire from Member of Parliament for the Bongo constituency, Edward Abambire Bawa.
Bawa, who is a member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, has accused Mahama of peddling falsehood to Ghanaians.
Bawa pointed out that ECG issued a statement on March 11 claiming that the erratic power supply (dumsor) in certain parts of the country was due to 630 faulty transformers within its operational areas. However, Bawa argued that the statement was misleading and contradicted the findings of the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC).
The PURC had requested information from ECG regarding the faulty transformers, including their GPS locations and ratings. Upon examination, the PURC found that only 89 transformers were overloaded, while the majority were operating within normal parameters.
Bawa insisted that the ECG MD should not be in office for approving a statement that misled the public. He also highlighted that the PURC’s findings supported the minority’s claims that ECG had not been complying with the Cash Waterfall Mechanism since August 2023.
Additionally, Bawa revealed that ECG is running 61 bank accounts instead of a single account, as advised by the IMF and President Akufo-Addo. This lack of transparency in financial operations has raised further concerns about the management of ECG under Mahama’s leadership.
