Duey E. “Duke” Wright, Jr., president, and chief executive officer of Midwest Communications, passed away on December 21 at the age of 83.

Wright’s parents assisted in the establishment of Midwest in 1958 by convincing them to apply for the 1400 AM license in Wausau, Wisconsin, while they were teenagers. (now 1390 Schofield WI) He took over the company’s management after earning his college degree and reopened the station as Top 40 WRIG above their music store, where he would also work as a DJ.

After introducing an FM to the market, he also began to diversify into other markets. In 18 markets in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, stations owned by the privately held Midwest are now situated.
