A 41-year-old truck driver, Abel Dzidotor, has been sentenced to six months in jail by the Juapong Circuit Court for his role in the obstruction and subsequent crash of a government train on the Tema-Mpakadan rail lines.

Dzidotor pleaded guilty to three out of four charges brought against him.

The first charge against him was for careless and inconsiderate driving, a violation of the RTA Act 683 (2004). He was sentenced to 100 penalty units, equivalent to a potential 20-month prison term if not paid. The second charge was for unauthorized stopping, resulting in a 20 penalty unit sentence. The third charge, for causing unlawful damage, led to a six-month sentence in hard labor.

Dzidotor pleaded not guilty to the fourth charge of failing to produce a driver’s license, claiming it was left in the damaged vehicle. He has been instructed to present the license to the court by May 9, 2024, or face potential consequences.

Despite being married with three children, Judge Prosper Deu-Love Gormashie considered the seriousness of the offenses during sentencing. The court also noted that Dzidotor’s guilty plea at the first instance did not waste the court’s time.
