A 52-year-old bar owner showed up in court in Accra as the owner of a big quantity of dried leaves believed to be narcotic drugs was discovered in his hands. George Akoto entered a not guilty plea after being accused of illegally possessing narcotics.
Akoto was granted GHC 100,000 in bail with three sureties, one of whom had to be backed by landed property, by the relieving judge, Mr. Bright Samuel Acquah. The hearing has been postponed until February 12, 2024.
The police officers who filed the complaints, according to the prosecution, are assigned to the Police Intelligence Directorate. The accused, according to the prosecution, runs a business at “June 4th,” an Accra suburb.
On January 19, 2024, the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and the Formed Police Unit (FPU) began an intelligence-led operation at Kantamanto Market and its environs in an effort to crack down on criminal activity within the enclave.
The prosecution claims that throughout the operation, the team detained roughly 62 people, including the defendant.
It stated that a large amount of dried leaves thought to be narcotic narcotics were found during a search at Akoto’s drinking location.
When the accused was questioned about the source of his supply, the prosecutor claimed, “he admitted ownership,” adding that the alleged drug supplier was a certain man at Timber Market.
However, the accused did not provide the police with the man’s location. To help with investigations, the prosecution indicated that attempts were being made to get the aforementioned man detained.
