The CEO of the Mental Health Authority, Prof. Pinaman Appau, has highlighted the urgent need for increased awareness around mental health issues in Ghana.
In a recent interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, she emphasized the prevalence of a lack of understanding about mental health, leading many to suffer in silence without seeking professional help.
Prof. Appau shared insights from a recent survey conducted by the authority, revealing that a significant portion of the population expressed a desire for more education and awareness on mental health. This prompted the Mental Health Authority to declare May as the purple month to focus on creating awareness and education.
She emphasized that mental health is a crucial aspect of everyday life and not an isolated event, stressing the importance of early intervention and support. Prof. Appau also debunked the misconception that only specific groups are at risk of mental illness, highlighting that anyone can be affected and there is a pressing need to address mental health issues proactively.
Furthermore, she underscored the vital role of integrating mental health into all healthcare disciplines, as mental health conditions often coexist with physical health conditions. By addressing mental health needs alongside physical health concerns, individuals can experience improved outcomes and overall well-being.
Prof. Appau called for policymakers and healthcare professionals to prioritize mental health and recognize its significance in overall healthcare delivery. By acknowledging the interconnected nature of mental and physical health, greater strides can be made in improving healthcare outcomes for all individuals.
As the Mental Health Authority continues to advocate for increased awareness and support for mental health issues, the hope is to foster a more inclusive and comprehensive approach to healthcare in Ghana. Let us all join hands in promoting mental health awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness for a healthier and happier society.
