On February 23, 1926, Dorothy May Steel was born in Flint, Michigan. She was an American actress who worked in both film and television. She was noted for beginning her career in the field at the age of 88. Her Hollywood credits include Black Panther, Poms, Jumanji: The Next Level, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
She spent many years working for the Internal Revenue Service in Detroit as a senior revenue officer.
She retired in 1984 and spent 20 years on St. Croix in the Caribbean before relocating to Atlanta to be closer to her grandson and her son Scott, who passed away in 2018.
Steel started performing in plays at the Frank Bailey Senior Center in Riverdale when she was 80 years old. Though old, she wanted to give acting a shot to see if she could do it.
She passed away on October 14 at age 95 at a Detroit hospital. When she fell ill, the majority of her “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” sequel filming had already been wrapped up. She had been living in Detroit for the previous year when Marvel flew her back home.
Her grandson, who was her only living relative, verified her demise.
The television movie “Merry Christmas, Baby” from 2016; the feature film “Daisy Winters”; four episodes of the prime-time serial opera “Saints & Sinners” in 2016; a commercial for the South Carolina Lottery; and a PSA for the DeKalb County Health Department are also among Steel’s credits.
