The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have issued a stern warning against drivers who are charging unapproved fares.
In a recent press release dated April 11, both organizations emphasized that any increase in transport fares without proper approval is deemed illegal, and passengers are advised to disregard such fare hikes.
The release, which was endorsed by representatives of the GPRTU and GRTCC, stated that some drivers have taken it upon themselves to raise transport fares in violation of the Administrative Instrument governing public transport fare reviews in the country. The unions have made it clear that this action must cease immediately.
The GPRTU and GRTCC have been engaging with stakeholders to analyze various cost components and find a sustainable solution amidst the escalating fuel prices and operational expenses. They have assured the public that once a consensus is reached, all necessary information will be communicated effectively.
During a meeting with the Ministry of Transport on April 10, 2024, the two transport groups presented their demands and reiterated that the current fares remain unchanged until an official decision is made regarding any adjustments. The unions have urged all regional and local authorities, as well as station welfare committees, to ensure compliance with the existing fares and to disregard any unauthorized fare increments.
The release concluded by emphasizing the importance of drivers adhering to the directive and expressing confidence in the leadership of the transport unions. The welfare of transport operators remains a top priority, and efforts will continue to be made to safeguard their interests.
