Donny Edward Hathaway was an American soul singer, keyboardist, songwriter, and arranger who lived from October 1, 1945, until January 13, 1979. Rolling Stone referred to him as a “soul legend.”

The most well-known of his songs are “The Ghetto,” “This Christmas,” “Someday We’ll All Be Free,” and “Little Ghetto Boy.”

Along with these songs, Hathaway is well known for his renditions of “A Song for You,” “For All We Know,” and “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know,” as well as his numerous collaborations with Roberta Flack on “Where Is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You.”

He garnered four Grammy Award nominations before winning one, and he was given a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.

Hathaway served as a songwriter, session guitarist, and producer for Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom Records in Chicago. He collaborated on projects with Curtis Mayfield, the Impressions, Jerry Butler, the Staple Singers, Aretha Franklin, and Curtis Butler.

He also helped with the arrangements for the Unifics’ songs “Court of Love” and “The Beginning of My End.” After being appointed the “house producer” at Curtom, he started recording there.
