Don Perkins was a retired NFL star who died on June 9, 2022.
Perkins concluded his career with 1,500 carries for 6,217 yards and 42 touchdowns, as well as 1,310 yards and three touchdowns on 146 catches.
In 1976, Perkins and Meredith were honored in the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor. The second and third players to earn the award were veterans of the 1960s Dallas offense.
Perkins is the Cowboys’ fourth all-time leading rusher, after Smith, Dorsett, and Elliott, and he ranks fifth in running touchdowns.
He was also a first-round choice of the AFL’s New York Titans (now the Jets) that same year, demonstrating how highly regarded Perkins was as a prospect out of the University of New Mexico.
He was named NFL Rookie of the Year in 1961 and went on to play eight seasons in Dallas, finishing as a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro running back who carried for 6,217 yards and 42 touchdowns (fourth-most in franchise history in both categories).
Perkins was later honored when he was inducted into the Cowboys Ring of Honor in 1976.
He was 84.
