Wanda Lavonne Jackson, better known by her stage as Wanda Jackson, was born in Maud, Oklahoma, on October 20, 1937. She achieved great success in rock and roll as well and was dubbed “the Queen of Rockabilly.”
With a streak of hits like “Let’s Have a Party” (1960), “Right or Wrong” (1961), and “In the Middle of a Heartache,” Jackson quickly made a name for herself as a distinctive and powerful female voice in the rockabilly scene (1961).
With the 1957 releases of “Santo Domingo” in Germany and “Fujiyama Mama” in Japan, she also found success abroad.
Jackson’s recordings became more and more centered on the country as the commercial demand for rockabilly declined in the 1960s. She became interested in gospel music after making a religious conversion in the early 1970s, starting with the album Praise the Lord (1972).
Rockabilly was experiencing a comeback in Europe in the 1980s, so Jackson started performing there and put out a number of CDs. She resumed performing secular music while traveling the country in the following decade.
With the release of The Party Ain’t Over (2011), produced by Jack White of the White Stripes, Jackson made a return at the age of 73. She then released Unfinished Business (2012).
