Tarantino was born on March 27, 1963, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Connie McHugh and Tony Tarantino, an aspiring actor who left the family before his son’s birth. He has Cherokee and Irish ancestors through his mother and Italian ancestors through his father. He was named after Quint Asper, a character played by Burt Reynolds in the TV series Gunsmoke. During a trip to Los Angeles, Tarantino’s mother met his father. Connie left Los Angeles after a brief marriage and divorce to live with her parents in Knoxville. Tarantino returned to Los Angeles with his mother in 1966. Tarantino’s mother married musician Curtis Zastoupil shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, and the family relocated to Torrance, a city in Los Angeles County’s South Bay area. Zastoupil accompanied Tarantino to numerous film screenings, while his mother allowed him to see more mature films such as Carnal Knowledge (1971) and Deliverance (1973). (1972). Tarantino was sent to live with his grandparents in Tennessee after his mother divorced Zastoupil in 1973 and he was misdiagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He stayed for less than a year before returning to California.
Tarantino wrote one of his earliest works, Captain Peachfuzz and the Anchovy Bandit, when he was 14 years old, based on the 1977 film Smokey and the Bandit. Tarantino later revealed that his mother had mocked his writing abilities when he was younger, and as a result, he vowed never to share his fortune with her. Tarantino was grounded by his mother when he was 15 for stealing Elmore Leonard’s novel The Switch from Kmart. He was only permitted to leave to attend the Torrance Community Theater, where he performed in plays such as Two Plus Two Makes Sex and Romeo and Juliet. He dropped out of Narbonne High School in Harbor City, Los Angeles, the same year.
