Tarantino was born on March 27, 1963, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Connie McHugh and Tony Tarantino, an aspiring actor who left the family before his son’s birth. He has Cherokee and Irish ancestors through his mother and Italian ancestors through his father. He was named after Quint Asper, a character played by Burt Reynolds in the TV series Gunsmoke. During a trip to Los Angeles, Tarantino’s mother met his father. Connie left Los Angeles after a brief marriage and divorce to live with her parents in Knoxville. Tarantino returned to Los Angeles with his mother in 1966. Tarantino was grounded by his mother when he was 15 for stealing Elmore Leonard’s novel The Switch from Kmart. He was only permitted to leave to attend the Torrance Community Theater, where he performed in plays such as Two Plus Two Makes Sex and Romeo and Juliet. He dropped out of Narbonne High School in Harbor City, Los Angeles, the same year.
