His parents were Helen Giuliani, born Helen D’Avanzo, and Harold Angelo Giuliani, who were both children of Italian immigrants. They only had one child who was Giuliani.
His father was a plumber and a bartender who had trouble holding a job. At a point, he was convicted of felony assault and robbery and served prison time in Sing Sing.
After his release, he worked as an enforcer for his brother-in-law Leo D’Avanzo.
On his father’s side, he is of Tuscan descent since his paternal grandparents were born in Montecatini Terme, Tuscany, Italy.
