Paul Harold Westerberg is an American musician who is most known for being the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter for Replacements. He was born on December 31, 1959. Westerberg started a solo career after the dissolution of the Replacements, releasing three albums on well-known record labels.
Westerberg has primarily been releasing songs that he self-produced and recorded in his basement home studio since the release of his third solo album. Under the alias Grandpaboy, he has also issued two LPs and an EP. Songs by Westerberg were published in 2017 on Bandcamp under the name Dry Wood Garage and on SoundCloud as User 964848511.
Westerberg’s first solo releases were two songs for the soundtrack to the 1992 Cameron Crowe film Singles, “Waiting for Somebody” and “Dyslexic Heart,” for which he is also credited with composing and performing the score. Reprise Records released his first solo album, 14 Songs, the following year.
Westerberg’s songs were featured on the Melrose Place (“A Star Is Bored”) and Friends (his covers of Jonathan Edwards’ “Sunshine” and “Stain Yer Blood”) television soundtracks in 1994 and 1995, respectively.
Westerberg co-wrote “Backlash” with Joan Jett for her 1991 album Notorious and appeared in the song’s video. He also recorded a duet with Jett for the Tank Girl soundtrack, “Let’s Do It” (1994).
