After playing for Knight High School in high school, George played basketball for the Fresno State Bulldogs for two seasons.
In the 2010 NBA Draft, he was taken by the Indiana Pacers with the 10th overall choice, and he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. In 2013, the year he was selected for his first All-Star game, he was awarded the NBA’s Most Improved Player.
While vying for a position on the American national team roster for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, George had a leg injury. He was out for the majority of the 2014–15 season, but he came back to capture a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and establish himself as an All-Star.
He played for the Oklahoma City Thunder for two seasons before being moved to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2019. He was traded to the Thunder in 2017.
