He was ten years old when the Japanese destroyed Pearl Harbor, precipitating the United States’ entry into World War II.
Mr. Mineta turned down the opportunity to become President Bill Clinton’s transportation secretary in 1992 in order to chair the House transportation committee, where he believed he could have a greater direct effect on policy.
He was first elected to the House in 1974 and served on the Committee on Public Works and Transportation, where he helped bring billions of dollars back to California for highway building and maintenance.
He was 90 when he died.
