Lester Piggott left the saddle at the end of the 1985 flat season to become a trainer.

His Eve Lodge stables in Newmarket, Suffolk, housed 97 horses and was responsible for 34 victories. His promising new job as a trainer was shattered when he was convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to prison. He got his OBE revoked (which he had been awarded in 1975 as an officer).

He died at age 86.

He is believed to have siblings however none are documented.

As a teenager, he rode Never Say Die to his first Derby victory at Epsom in 1954, when he was only 18 years old. He went on to win eight more races, including Crepello in 1957, St. Paddy in 1960, Sir Ivor in 1968, Nijinsky in 1970, Roberto in 1972, Empery in 1976, The Minstrel in 1977, and Teenoso in 1978. (1983).

Piggott was inducted into the British Champions Series Hall of Fame in 2021; he and Frankel were the first two inducted. The Hall of Fame was established to commemorate the contemporary history of flat racing in the United Kingdom, dating back to 1970 when Piggott won the Triple Crown riding Nijinksy.
