Katherine Moore Porter is an American politician, law professor, and lawyer who has served as the 47th congressional district of California’s representative since 2023. Porter was born on January 3, 1974, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and grew up in a small farming community. Dan Porter, her father, was a farmer-turned-banker. Liz, her mother, founded Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting.
Porter attended Yale University after graduating from Phillips Academy, where she majored in American studies and graduated in 1996. The Effects of Corporate Farming on Rural Community was the title of her undergraduate thesis. Porter attended Yale’s Grace Hopper College . During this time, Porter also interned for Chuck Grassley.
In March 2012, California Attorney General Kamala Harris appointed Porter to serve as the state’s independent monitor of banks in a nationwide $25 billion mortgage settlement. As monitor, Porter oversaw the banks’ implementation of $9.5 billion in settlement reforms for Californians.
