Outside the back door of the Emmotts’ home is an adorable puppy, enjoying the sunshine and gnawing on her water bowl. Their daughter, Sarah, was desperate for a dog, and eventually, the family gave in, hunting around and buying little Ruby.
Sarah was in hospital when Ruby joined the household and did not have the chance to meet the puppy in the flesh.
Two weeks ago, Sarah died of an immune disorder almost a year after receiving a kidney transplant in Leeds. She was eight years old and, the Emmotts thought, in the best health of her life.
Sarah loved to tell people she was famous. And in her way she was. She appeared twice as a mascot at Leeds United and over time, became a favorite of the club’s midfielder, Kalvin Phillips. The club helped support the Emmotts’ appeal to find a suitable kidney donor and they invited the family to the directors’ box at Elland Road for their game against Liverpool earlier this month, the first match after Sarah passed away. Phillips held up a shirt before kick-off with “RIP Sarah” on the back of it.
