James Spencer Cleverly TD VR (born 4 September 1969) is a British politician and Army Reserve officer who has held the position of Foreign Secretary since 2022. In 2022, he served as Secretary of State for Education.
He is a Conservative Party member who has served as the MP for Braintree in Essex since 2015. From 2019 to 2020, he was Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party with Ben Elliot, and from 2008 to 2016, he was a member of the London Assembly (AM) representing Bexley and Bromley.

Cleverly was moved to the Cabinet as Minister without portfolio when Boris Johnson was named Prime Minister in July 2019. From 2019 to 2020, he was Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party with Ben Elliot. Cleverly was dismissed from the Cabinet and named Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa in the 2020 cabinet reshuffle.
Cleverly lobbied for a Brexit vote in the EU membership referendum in 2016. From 2018 to 2019, he was Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party, and from April to May, he was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union.
In December 2021, he was named Minister of State for the Middle East, North Africa, and North America, and in February 2022, he was appointed Minister of State for Europe and North America. After Michelle Donelan resigned during the 2022 Government crisis, he became Secretary of State for Education in July 2022. He was named Foreign Secretary by newly appointed Prime Minister Liz Truss in September 2022.
