The world’s number one tennis player, Russian Daniil Medvedev, has yet to publicly condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Following Russia’s invasion, which began in late February, Medvedev stated at the Mexican Open that he wants to “promote peace.” However, this was not interpreted as a condemnation of Putin’s actions.
Medvedev’s stance (or lack thereof) was raised this week during a debate in the British Parliament about the possibility of the Russians playing at Wimbledon this summer. British Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston stated that Medvedev must express his dissatisfaction with Putin in order to compete in the United Kingdom’s premier tournament.
Nigel Huddleston, the Sports Minister, is actively working on the requirements for athletes from both countries to compete in international tournaments. The UK government is in talks with the All-England Club about players from ‘pariah states’ like Medvedev competing at SW19 this summer.
