On July 1, 1952, Canadian actor, comedian, producer, performer, and writer Daniel Edward Aykroyd CM OOnt was born.
His father, Peter Hugh Aykroyd, counseled Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau on strategy while his mother, Lorraine Hélène Marie, worked as a secretary. His mother was French Canadian, and his father was of English, Scottish, Irish, French, and Dutch descent. His brother Peter was also a performer.
He completed his secondary education at St. Pius X and St. Patrick’s before enrolling at Carleton University to pursue a degree in sociology and criminology, but he departed before completing it.
He was a comedian who appeared in a number of nightclubs around Canada and, for a while, was in charge of running things at Toronto’s Club 505 As a cast member of the short-lived Canadian sketch comedy program The Hart, which also included Lorne Michaels and the Lorne Terrific Hour, Aykroyd launched his career at the age of 17.
In 1973, he was a member of the Second City comedy troupe in Chicago and Toronto.
