During the 1960s, he became known in the UK for his successful novelty records including “The Hole in the Ground” and “Right Said Fred” and appearances in comedy films including Two-Way Stretch in 1960 and the Carry On series.

Bernard was born to his parents John Edward Cribbins his father and Ethel Clarkson his mother. His mother Ethel was a cotton weaver and was born in 1898 and died on 1989 and World War I veteran, and his father, John Edward was also born in 1896 and passed away in 1964. Bernard was born on the 29th of December 1928 in the Darker area of Oldham, Lancashire.

He described his father as a “jack of all trades” who also dabbled in acting. He left school at the age of 13 and found a job as an assistant stage manager at a local theatre club, where he also took on some small acting roles, and then served an apprenticeship at the Oldham Repertory Theatre.
In 1947, he began national service with the Parachute Regiment in Aldershot, Hampshire, as well as Mandatory Palestine.
