Doechii, a rapper whose real name is Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, was founded in the US on August 14, 1998. She gained notoriety in 2021 with the release of her debut EP, Oh the Places You’ll Go (2020), thanks to the popularity of the song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” on TikTok.
Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. When she was younger, she took part in cheerleading, gymnastics, ballet, tap dancing, acting, and other activities. She studied at Tampa’s Howard W. Blake High School.
She started creating songs in 2015, and in 2016, she uploaded her debut single, “Girls,” on SoundCloud under the name Iamdoechii. She produced Coven Music Session, Vol. 1 in the same year. In 2022, she signed deals with Capitol Records and Top Dawg Entertainment, through which she distributed her second EP, She/Her/Black Bitch.
The storylines of Doechii’s songs are “quirky,” and her rap style is “animated,” according to Mankaprr Conteh of Rolling Stone. Several artists, including Missy Elliott, The Notorious B.I.G., Azealia Banks, Nicki Minaj, and The Notorious B.I.G., have been compared to her sound.
