The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has issued a statement advising the public to disregard the recent announcement of a 15% increase in transport fares by some transport operators. The announcement, made by the Transport Operators Association, stated that the fare hike would go into effect on July 22.

While acknowledging the rising prices of petroleum products and their impact on transportation costs, the GPRTU emphasized the importance of proper stakeholder engagement before any fare increase is implemented. According to the union, the necessary discussions with relevant stakeholders have not taken place, and therefore, current fare rates should be maintained.

Abass Imoro, the Industrial Relations Officer for GPRTU, reiterated in an interview with Citi FM that the process for fare adjustments must be followed diligently. He highlighted that fare increases cannot be imposed arbitrarily and require thorough consultations with all parties involved.

Mr. Imoro assured the public that the GPRTU is committed to ensuring fair practices and will continue engaging with stakeholders to address the challenges posed by the increasing fuel prices. Until these discussions are concluded and agreements are reached, transport fares should remain unchanged.

The union made it clear that they have not authorized any fare increment at this time and urged the public to disregard the announcement made by the Transport Operators Association. They emphasized the need to adhere to the established system before any fare adjustments are made.

It is evident that the GPRTU is prioritizing proper procedures and stakeholder consultations in determining fare adjustments to ensure a fair and transparent process for all parties involved.
