Diego Costa lands surprise Premier League return despite end of transfer window
Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa is expected to join Wolves after £15 million newcomer Sasa Kalajdzic sustained a serious knee injury.
In Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Southampton at Molineux, Kalajdzic, 25, sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage. The Austrian only moved to Wolves from Stuttgart last Wednesday, and it’s anticipated that he will now miss the majority of the current campaign.
With just Raul Jimenez, 31, as a recognized striker after youthful prodigy Fabio Silva joined Anderlecht on loan, Wolves boss Bruno Lage is lacking in choices up front. Jimenez, a Mexican international, also complained of groin pain during Saturday’s pregame warmup. Wolves acted swiftly to give Costa, 33, the opportunity to show he can still compete in the Premier League.
Tuesday, Costa will report to Wolves at their training facility in Compton and go through all the required medical examinations. Due to the fact that he hasn’t played any professional football since leaving Brazil’s Atletico Mineiro in January, Wolves will be concerned about his level of match fitness.
The Spain international is expected to receive a one-year contract from Wolves if all goes according to plan during his trial, covering for Kalajdzic while he receives treatment. If he performs well, there may be room for the West Midlands team to extend that contract.
