Tyler Gregory Okonma was born on March 6, 1991, in Hawthorne, California, to a Nigerian father of Igbo descent and an American mother of mixed African-American and white Canadian ancestry.
When he was 14 years old, he began taking piano lessons. During his twelve years in school, he went to 12 different schools in the Sacramento and Los Angeles areas.
Okonma was not allowed to join the band class in the ninth grade because he couldn’t read music. In the eighth grade, Okonma attended drama class but was expelled for being too hyper.
He spent less than a week at FedEx and more than two years at Starbucks. Okonma got the name for his stage persona from a Myspace page where he shared his artistic endeavors.

He spent his formative years in Hawthorne, never met his father, and only relocated to Ladera Heights at the age of 17. At the age of seven, he would take the cover off a CD case and construct covers for his own hypothetical albums, replete with tracklists and song lengths, before he could even begin to create music.
