Owen returned to the repertory theater in Sidmouth, Devon, after spending four years working in television, where he continued to act and direct plays.
Only a few days after Compo’s father passed away from cancer in July 1999, Owen was selected to play the long-lost son. He first learned about the search through Roy Clarke, the show’s writer, when the producer Alan Bell called him.
According to Owen in 2000, “It was two or three days after Dad had passed away.” Naturally, planning the burial was in my thoughts. It never even crossed my mind that I may be asked to play Compo’s long-lost son. I gave Alan’s suggestion some quick thinking before acting on it.
