Owen returned to the repertory theater in Sidmouth, Devon, after spending four years working in television, where he continued to act and direct plays.
Only a few days after Compo’s father passed away from cancer in July 1999, Owen was selected to play the long-lost son. He first learned about the search through Roy Clarke, the show’s writer, when the producer Alan Bell called him.
