Mike Tyson has been married three times. His first marriage was to actress Robin Givens. The pair began dating in 1987 and got married later on February 7, 1988.
Their marriage wasn’t all sugar and roses, because before they got married in February, Givens claimed that Tyson was physically abusive. This claim was the beginning of a very rocky marriage between the two.
The couple did not have a prenuptial agreement and at the time, Tyson was worth approximately $50 million.
Givens suffered a miscarriage in June 1988, however, Tyson believed that her pregnancy was only a ruse to push the to a marriage. He noted that during her pregnancy, she did not gain a single pound.
In a joint interview with Tyson on 20/20 in September 1988, Givens told Barbara Walters that life with Tyson was “torture, pure hell, worse than anything I could possibly imagine,”.
Everything finally came to a climax when Givens filed for divorce a month after the interview. She cited spousal abuse and was granted a temporary restraining order. Tyson on the other hand, sought an annulment, accusing her of stealing millions of dollars and manipulating the public.
In response to Tyson, Givens filed a $125 million libel suit for defamation. The divorce was finalized on February 14, 1989.
