Did Melissa Etheridge have a double mastectomy?

Despite having a BRCA gene mutation and a breast cancer diagnosis in 2004, Etheridge said she opted against having a double mastectomy. It is unclear why she believes that her choice was any more courageous than Jolie’s.

Melissa Etheridge, a breast cancer survivor, disagrees with Angelina Jolie’s recent choice to have a prophylactic double mastectomy after learning she carried the BRCA gene mutation that frequently causes the disease.

The singer admits that she shares Jolie’s DNA mutation in a recent interview with Washington, D.C.-based LGBT weekly the Washington Blade, but says Jolie’s choice is “not something I could believe in for myself.”
