In Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jacobs attended McLain High School. He played high school football for the Titans and accumulated 5,372 yards and 56 touchdowns. He committed to the University of Alabama to play college football.
Jacobs was homeless in middle school. In a Kia commercial that ran during Super Bowl LIV, he was shown thinking back on his time spent homeless at the conclusion of his rookie season in the NFL.
Jacobs split time with Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough as a freshman at Alabama in 2016, rushing 85 times for 567 yards and four touchdowns. He had 284 yards on 46 carries and one touchdown as a sophomore in 2017. After the season, it was revealed that he had spent the majority of the season playing with a broken ankle. He was named the SEC Championship Game MVP as a junior after rushing for 83 yards and two touchdowns against the Georgia Bulldogs.
