Manchester City captain Fernandinho has stunned manager Pep Guardiola by announcing that he does not want to sign a new contract that would keep him at the club beyond this season.
The 36-year-old’s contract expires in the summer, and speaking to the press ahead of Man City’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, the Brazilian brought to light he is unlikely to stay for a 10th season with the Premier League champions.
The Brazilian midfielder was confirmed as the Blues’ first summer acquisition in 2013 with his former club Shakhtar Donetsk holding out for a whopping £34 million fee.
Did Fernandinho pay his own transfer fee?
Fernandinho was so eager to join City back then that he paid an amount of £4 million of his own cost in 2013.
At the time it appeared that the transfer might be halted due to Shakhtar’s requests, so Fernandinho proposed to forfeit £4 million owing to him in order to finalize the transfer deal which resulted in Manchester City paying £30 million.
This transfer took place eight years ago when he was 28 years of age.
