Dick Vitale underwent successful vocal cord surgery. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune published an item about the ESPN announcer’s second operation in four months, which was tweeted.

“I must be on voice rest for 2 weeks and then do a follow-up examination,” Vitale texted the Herald-Tribune, “but (Dr. Steven Zeitels of Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital) is very optimistic that I will return to doing what I love, calling college hoops games on ESPN. That is the best medicine I can receive.”

According to the Herald-Tribune, Vitale underwent his first surgery in February to remove precancerous growths on his vocal chords known as dysplasia.

He missed a significant portion of the 2021–22 college basketball season due to the problem. Vitale told the Herald-Tribune that Zietels reported that the surgery on Thursday went “better than expected.”

Over the past two years, Vitale, 82, has struggled with a number of health difficulties. He had a lymphoma and melanoma diagnosis in 2021.

Following a successful course of treatment, Vitale briefly resumed broadcasting before taking a break to rest his vocal chords. Vitale revealed in March that a PET scan had come back clear of cancer.
