Diahann Carroll was a successful American television and stage actress and singer.

Carroll was born in the Bronx, New York City, on July 17, 1935, to John Johnson and Mabel Faulk.

Her father worked as a subway conductor, and her mother worked as a nurse.

She did a modelling assignment for “Ebony” magazine when she was 15 years old.

During this time, she tried out for Arthur Godfrey’s radio show “Talent Scouts.”

Her victory in this competition earned her recognition.

She attended New York University after completing her secondary education.

She was thinking about working in a nightclub at the time.

The turning point in her life came when she participated on the Dumont Television Network Program ‘Chance of a Lifetime’ in 1954.

She was the winner of this show for four weeks.

Due to her popularity in this program, she got job offers from Manhattan’s Cafe Society and Latin Quarter nightclubs.

She went on to feature in numerous movies and gain several awards.

Carroll died at her Los Angeles home after a long battle with cancer, according to her daughter, producer-journalist Suzanne Kay.

Her grandchildren, August and Sydney, are survivors in addition to her daughter.

She was 84.
