After his birth, Bane, his sister, Marissa, and they regularly moved.
When he was two years old, he moved in with his great-grandparents, who raised him for the rest of his childhood in Richmond, Indiana.
When Bane was thirteen years old, he discovered that his father, Etieno Ekiko, lived in Nigeria. When he was younger, he was better at baseball than basketball, but he liked basketball. Bane played baseball, football, and soccer up until the eighth grade while his great-grandfather taught at the elementary level.
Bane participated in basketball for Richmond, Indiana’s Seton Catholic High School, a tiny private institution. Josh Jurgens, who had coached him in third grade, had been named head basketball coach of the school during his eighth-grade season, which attracted him to it. Bane had a state-best average of 30 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 3.2 blocks per game as a senior.
