Desai Williams, a former Canadian sprinter, died unexpectedly over the weekend at the age of 62.

Williams was a member of Canada’s bronze-medal winning 4×100-meter relay team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, but he is best known for his sixth-place result in the 100 meters at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, which saw teammate Ben Johnson’s gold medal taken after a positive doping test.

The news of Williams’ death shocked the track and field community.

Athletics Canada issued him a lifetime coaching ban in 2018 after an investigation concluded that he had broken the organization’s sexual harassment policy eight years prior.

Saint Kitts and Nevis native began her athletic career playing soccer before transitioning to track in high school.

He went on to Clemson University to run track.
