Derrick Danta Barnes Jr., an American football linebacker with the Detroit Lions of the National Football League, was born on May 29, 1999. (NFL). He was selected by the Lions in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft after playing college football for Purdue.

Barnes was raised in Covington, Kentucky, and went to Holy Cross High School, where he participated in football and basketball games and ran on the track team under the direction of former Cincinnati Bengal Bruce Kozerski.
During his first season, Barnes started two of the 12 games that he participated in. As a sophomore, he was promoted to the starting lineup, and he finished the year with 92 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks. He was switched to the defensive end position for the 2018 Music City Bowl following the regular season. He continued to play pass rusher throughout his junior year, finishing the campaign tied for second on the team in sacks with 7.5 and tackles for loss with 11.0.
