In the summer of 2009, O’Neill was diagnosed with cancer.[8] Initially thought to be a recurrence of a previous stomach ulcer, O’Neill was later diagnosed with stomach cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

He was treated at Beacon Hospital, Beaumont Hospital, and St. Vincent’s Private Hospital.

Before joining the University College Dublin horticulture team, O’Neill worked at the Marlfield Garden Centre in Cabinteely, Dublin.

He began appearing on RTÉ children’s programming in 1982, before hosting a gardening section on Live at Three. O’Neill has also featured on The Garden Show and has given gardening presentations on the magazine show Open House and Today With Pat Kenny. He was a frequent horticultural contributor to Derek Mooney’s Mooney program on RTÉ Radio 1.
