Dennis Banfield has passed away at the age of 92 – five years after winning a whopping £18 million with his wife Shirley.
Dennis, a former RAF serviceman, hit the jackpot with his wife of more than 60 years and the pair decided to share their winnings with their two daughters, Karen and Tina.
The emotional couple wiped away tears of joy during a press conference when they were presented with the cheque for over £18 million in 2018. Despite their newfound wealth, Dennis and Shirley chose to continue living in their modest three-bedroom semi-detached home in Winterbourne, Bristol.
Their winning numbers, 5, 8, 9, 10, 38, and 53, were selected through a Lucky Dip purchased from their local newsagent, Winterbourne News. The couple celebrated their win by going out for a meal at a carvery, which they described as “nothing special”.
Dennis, who spent 40 years working for the South West Electricity Board, met Shirley on a blind date many years ago. Throughout their marriage, their main focus was always ensuring the well-being of their daughters.
Sadly, Dennis passed away peacefully in July of last year, leaving behind a legacy of generosity and kindness. His granddaughter Lucy Probert paid tribute to him online, expressing how much he is missed and loved by his family.
Despite their immense wealth, Dennis and Shirley stayed true to their roots and continued to live a simple and humble life. They were a beloved couple in their community, known for their acts of generosity and kindness.
