Denis McDonough is an American politician and government official who has served in various roles in the United States government. He was born on December 2, 1969, in Stillwater, Minnesota.
McDonough has held several significant positions, most notably serving as the White House Chief of Staff under President Barack Obama from 2013 to 2017. As Chief of Staff, he was one of the highest-ranking officials in the executive branch and played a key role in advising the president, managing the White House staff, and coordinating policy implementation.
Prior to his role as Chief of Staff, Denis McDonough served as the Deputy National Security Advisor to President Obama from 2010 to 2013. In this capacity, he dealt with various national security and foreign policy matters, including counterterrorism efforts and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.
Before joining the Obama administration, McDonough worked in Congress, including as a senior advisor to former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and as the staff director for the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
