Delta flight with maggots on plane forced to turn around

An Amsterdam to Detroit Delta Airlines flight was canceled in the middle of the journey when it was found to contain maggots.

The cause of the disruption on flight 133 AMS-DTW was not specified by the airline spokeswoman, who only said that it “was interrupted due to an improperly packed carry-on bag.” Although the representative could not specify the scope or nature of the remedy, she did state that clients received compensation for the inconvenience.

Delta released a statement saying, “The aircraft returned to the gate and passengers were placed on the next available flight.” In addition, the airline stated that the aircraft was taken out of service for maintenance.

About a dozen maggots fell from an overhead bin and landed on a female passenger who was sitting next to him, a fellow traveler told Fox2Detroit.

At first, he thought the whole thing was a joke, but the passenger informed the news source that the insects were found in a carry-on bag that included “rotten fish” that had been wrapped in newspaper.

The aircraft barely made it as far as the United Kingdom before doing a U-turn and heading back to Amsterdam, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

According to Transportation Security Administration regulations, passengers are allowed to bring food on their flights, including fresh and frozen meat, seafood, and vegetables.

Unhygienic cabin conditions caused another Delta flight to be delayed in September. Due to a passenger experiencing explosive diarrhea, a Delta aircraft from Atlanta to Barcelona had to be canceled due to a potential “biohazard issue.”
