Deborah Mandel Senn was a Democratic Party lawyer and politician in the United States.
She was born on March 8, 1949, in Chicago. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her law degree from Loyola University Chicago.
Senn was the first woman to be elected as Washington’s insurance commissioner, defeating incumbent Richard Marquardt in 1992. In 1996, she was re-elected. She was also a professor of health care law at the Loyola University.
She was well-known for becoming directly engaged in situations people were being refused possibly life-saving medical care.
She also supported legislation to abolish insurance discrimination against victims of domestic abuse and was an advocate for Holocaust survivors who were refused insurance benefits.
Instead of campaigning for re-election, she ran for the United States Senate in 2000, losing in the Democratic primary election to Maria Cantwell.
