The United Kingdom — and the world — is mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II. She died on Thursday at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
As crowds of the press, tourists, and royal watchers gathered outside Buckingham Palace, a rainbow appeared. Some photos even captured a double rainbow.
Charles, the queen’s eldest son and heir to the throne of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is now king.
Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952, making her the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch. The queen’s husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died in 2021.
They had four children, eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother,” King Charles said in his first statement as monarch. “During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”
