Former Springbok captain Dawie de Villiers was honored by Mark Alexander, president of the South African Rugby Union, not only for his role in South African rugby but also as a politician later in his life.

As a political scrumhalf, as well-known philosopher Willie Esterhuyse described him, he was also heavily involved in the talks that led to the ANC’s unbanning, Mandela’s subsequent release, and the first democratic elections in 1994. De Villiers left politics in 1996.

Between 1962 and 1970, he played 25 Tests and 53 matches for the Springboks, and he captained 22 of them, the first of which was against the All Blacks in New Zealand in 1965 when he was 25 years old.
