David W. Hoyle was a North Carolina state legislator. From 1993 to 2010, he was a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the state’s forty-third Senate district, and from 2010 to 2013, he was the state’s secretary of revenue.
He was also a real estate entrepreneur from Dallas, North Carolina, who served as mayor and graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College.
Hoyle was born on February 4, 1939, and tragically passed away on March 29, 2023.

David W. Hoyle passed away on March 29, 2023, at the age of 84. Hoyle died as a result of stroke complications, according to autopsy results. He died at his house in Dallas, North Carolina, in the United States.
Hoyle was a longstanding co-chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and served nine years in the Senate. Hoyle and Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand were regarded as top lieutenants to Dare County Senator Marc Basnight.
Over a 15-year span, Hoyle’s hands were in almost every major tax and finance operation in North Carolina.
Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, who briefly served in the Senate alongside Hoyle until 2000, stated in a tweet that Hoyle “brought his practical business experience and compassion for the people of his district to the legislature, and North Carolina is a better place for his work.”
“His willingness to challenge the status quo plus his warmth and wit made him a strong senator and mayor and a great friend,” Cooper added.
