William David Trimble, Baron Trimble, PC, was a British politician, who served as Northern Ireland’s first minister from 1998 to 2002 and as the party’s leader from 1995 to 2005. The Good Friday Agreement, the peace accord that put an end to the worst of Northern Ireland’s Troubles, was negotiated in large part by Lord Trimble.

He was 77.

It is with great regret that the family of Lord Trimble announces that he died away peacefully earlier today after a brief illness, according to a statement from the UUP.

Together with SDLP leader John Hume, he shared the Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions.

He has served as Baron Trimble of Lisnagarvey in the House of Lords since 2006.

As the first minister, he was the first to hold the position.

In August 1968, Trimble married Heather McComb; the union disintegrated in divorce in 1976. His first marriage produced no offspring.

In August 1978, Trimble wed Daphne Elizabeth, a former pupil. They have two girls and two boys (Richard, Victoria, Nicholas, and Sarah).

Nicholas, who is his son, is involved with the Ulster Unionist Party. In 2016, Nicholas Trimble was elected to Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council to take Alexander Redpath’s position as the councilor for Downshire West.
