David Wade Sullivan was born on April 29, 1977, in Tyler, Texas. He grew up in Longview, Texas, and graduated from Spring Hill Schools in 1996.
He went on to Baylor University, where he majored in marketing and corporate communications and graduated in 2000. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity in college and played one year of football and two years of soccer.

Sullivan lives in Birch Hall, Essex, near Theydon Bois. It was built in 1992 by Ashby and Horner to Sullivan’s design on approximately 12 acres (49,000 m2) of land at a cost of £7.5 million for the land and building.
Sullivan played Abe in Primer, an independent film that won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. At the 2004 Film Independent Spirit Awards, Sullivan was nominated for a Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance.
The film was shot in Dallas in 2001, but editing and post-production took two years. Sullivan relocated to Los Angeles after the premiere of Primer to pursue a career as an actor. Ben Banks, an independent comedy-drama, was shot in August 2010. Sullivan also played Jon Titterton in the 2012 film Argo.
