The president of the European Parliament David Sassoli has died at the age of 65, his spokesperson announced.
Robert Cuillo announced the news on Twitter, writing that Sassoli passed away at 1:15 am on January 11, 2022, at a hospital in Aviano, Italy.
He had been there since 26 December “because of a serious complication due to a dysfunction of the immune system”, his office announced on Monday.
Sassoli had been struggling with poor health for months but carried on working.

It is reported that he died from suffering from Pneumonia.
In September 2021, Mr Sassoli was taken to a hospital in Strasbourg where he was treated for a severe case of pneumonia caused by legionella.
He worked remotely during October, officially resuming his political duties in November. But he was again hospitalized on 26 December, Italian media report.
Mr Sassoli was married to Alessandra Vittorini and leaves behind two children.
