David Gold was born on September 9, 1936, in London, England.

He was the chairman of Birmingham City Football Club until 2009. From 2010 until his death in 2023, he was the joint chairman of West Ham United.

Gold was born in Stepney and raised in East London at 442 Green Street in West Ham, near the Boleyn Ground. He was a West Ham youth team player who was handed documents to sign as an apprentice professional for the first team, but his father refused to sign them.

Prior to his unexpected demise, he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Ann Summers and the lingerie retailer Knickerbox are owned by Gold Group International (GGI).

Gold and his brother Ralph co-owned GGI until Gold purchased Ralph’s portion in 2008.

He and his brother Ralph co-owned Gold Star Publications (GSP), which includes printing and distribution companies as well as a roster of titles such as Rustler and Raider.

He and his brother liquidated their holdings in November 2006. In 2007, the brothers sold their investment in Sport Newspapers due to dwindling sales and profitability.

He owned Gold Aviation International, a corporate air service, until 2006, when he sold it for £4.4 million.
